[ARCHIVED] Help Improve Public Safety with Measure Z Funds

If you have a project idea that provides a public safety or essential service to our community, consider applying for Measure Z funds. You can apply for Measure Z funding now through Friday, Feb.17.

Measure Z is a half-cent sales tax applied to most local purchases and was first passed by voters in November 2014 and renewed in 2018. Since then, the Board of Supervisors has approved over $80 million in project funding. Some of the public safety projects that have been funded by the Board of Supervisors include:

  • Establishing the Humboldt County Roadway/Evacuation Route and Firebreak Wildfire Resiliency Project to improve brush and fire hazards along county roadways in addition to enhancing evacuation routes in the Shelter Cove area.
  • Maintaining ambulance service for K’ima:w Medical Center and Southern Trinity Area Rescue (STAR) serving communities in the Hoopa and greater Willow Creek area in addition to maintaining ambulance for communities along Highway 36.
  • Expansion of the Department of Health & Human Services’ Mobile Intervention & Services Team (MIST), which provides mental health crisis intervention services in the field.
  • Hiring more than 40 Sheriff’s Office personnel, including resident deputies and school resource officers.
  • Maintaining the Adult Protective Services and District Attorney’s Offices’ Elder and Vulnerable Adult Services Team (EVAST) to collaboratively address cases of elder and vulnerable adult abuse.
  • Hiring a student resource officer for local schools in the Eel River Valley and a student resource officer and juvenile diversion officers for local schools in Arcata.

Application Process

Visit the county’s website to download the application and budget worksheet you will need to submit to have your project considered. Application requirements include:

  •  A description of your proposal.
  • A description of your plan for sustainability in order for your proposal to carry on without relying on Measure Z funding.
  • An explanation as to how the request is an essential service or for public safety.

 Applications will be accepted until Friday, Feb 17 at 5 p.m. 

If you cannot download the application or budget worksheet you can request a copy by contacting the County Administrative Office at cao@co.humboldt.ca.us or (707) 455-7266. Applications can also be picked up in person at 825 5th Street, Room 112 in Eureka. Please submit your application via email to the above address.

Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Measure Z Expenditures

The Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Measure Z Expenditures advises the Board of Supervisors on Measure Z funds. The advisory committee will meet each Thursday in March to review submitted applications and recommend projects for funding that make Humboldt a better, safer place to live.

The next meeting for the Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Measure Z Expenditures is scheduled for Thursday, March 2. You can sign up on the county’s website to receive notifications when new meeting agendas are posted and when meetings are scheduled.

Appointments

Members of the Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Measure Z Expenditures are made by the Board of Supervisors. The committee is comprised of one appointment from each supervisorial district, representatives for the Sheriff’s Office and Fire Chiefs’ Association, two at-large appointments (from any county district), and two non-voting alternates. The current committee members are as follows:

  •  First District Representative: Glenn Ziemer
  • Second District Representative: Tami Trent
  • Third District Representative: Ginger Campbell – Vice Chair
  • Fourth District Representative: Nicholas Kohl
  • Fifth District Representative: Scott Binder
  • At-Large: Justin Robbins – Chair
  • At-Large: Bob Bronkall
  • Fire Chiefs’ Association Representative: Sean Robertson
  • Sheriff’s Office Representative: Sheriff William Honsal
  • Alternate: Eddie Morgan
  • Alternate: Vacant
