What Are Your Hazard Mitigation Priorities?

Sheriff's Office Posted on February 24, 2025 | Last Updated on March 24, 2025

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services (OES) is collaborating with 25 local jurisdictions to update the Humboldt County Multi-Jurisdictional Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) and invites you to share your input.

The updated plan advances the county’s ongoing efforts to reduce potential risks from natural disasters. Originally developed in 2007, the hazard mitigation plan is regularly updated to stay current, comply with the federal Disaster Mitigation Act and maintain the county’s eligibility for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding. The last update was in 2019, and the 2025 plan continues this work by outlining resources, information and strategies to enhance disaster preparedness and reduce risks from natural hazards.

It is no secret that natural disasters regularly impact the North Coast. From winter storms to floods, earthquakes, fires and landslides, residents continue to be affected throughout the year by natural disasters. In order to create a hazard mitigation plan that meets the needs of the community, Humboldt County OES is collaborating with local cities, tribal governments and invested parties, municipalities, agencies and community members to update the hazard mitigation plan.

Share Your Input

The county invites all interested community members to fill out the Humboldt County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan Survey. Humboldt County residents are encouraged to share their input and priorities to help the identify solutions that align with the public’s needs.

The survey is available online at humboldtgov.org/HazardMitigation and will be open until Monday, March 24 at 8 p.m. The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete, and all responses will remain confidential.

The survey results will be reviewed and appropriate feedback from the community will be incorporated in the 2025 LHMP. The updated Humboldt County Multi-Jurisdictional Local Hazard Mitigation Plan is anticipated to be submitted to FEMA for approval in summer 2025.
