[ARCHIVED] Serve Your Community, Earn Extra Money as an Election Worker for the 2020 Election

The Humboldt County Office of Elections has been gearing up for an unprecedented 2020 election and needs your help. The Elections Office is recruiting more than 160 election workers to help run the election, with assignments ranging from people working only on election night to others that span from Oct. 5 through Nov. 3.

Election workers are the heart and soul of elections in Humboldt County. General elections like the one ahead of us in November involve the entire county and require hundreds of dedicated workers to ensure smooth and efficient voting for elections. Election workers must be able to read and write in fluent English, and either be registered to vote, or a high school student 16-17 years of age with a GPA of 2.5 or greater, or a permanent resident of the United States.

Election workers serve in many positions:

  • Voter Assistance Center Manager
  • Voter Assistance Center Assistant Manager
  • Voting Equipment Technician
  • Rover
  • Clerk
  • Ballot Transporter
  • Election Night Worker

The election worker positions are a great way to earn experience (individuals as young as 16 can apply), earn extra money and help ensure our election runs smoothly. Compensation for the position ranges from $20 per day (plus mileage) for ballot transporters, up to $15.81 per hour for Voter Assistance Center Mangers, and $430 for 4 days as a Clerk (with paid training).

Following are descriptions of each position you could fill for the 2020 election:

Voter Assistance Center Manager

Duties: Leads a team of election workers at an assigned voter assistance center polling facility; coordinates with the Office of Elections, assigned polling facility, and team members; assists the Office of Elections recruit team members; assists with setup and closing; and guides team’s Election Day assignments.

Time Commitment: Approximately 50 hours from October 31 – November 3. Training required.

Qualifications: Worked a minimum of one election as an inspector or inspector-in-training. Possess valid California driver’s license and vehicle insurance.

Compensation: $14.31-15.81 per hour

Voter Assistance Center Assistant Manager

Duties: Under direction of a manager, coordinates with the Office of Elections, assigned polling facility, and team members; assists with setup and closing; guides team’s Election Day assignments; and serves as manager in the event the assigned manager is unable to work.

Time Commitment: Approximately 50 hours from October 31 – November 3. Training required.

Qualifications: Worked a minimum of one election as an inspector or inspector-in-training. Possess valid California driver’s license and vehicle insurance.

Compensation: $13.00-13.61 per hour

Voting Equipment Technician

Duties: Maintains efficient function of voting equipment; sets up and takes down ADA mitigation equipment; assists with setup and closing; and performs Election Day team assignments. 

Time Commitment: Approximately 50 hours from October 31 – November 3. Training required.

Qualifications: Worked a minimum of one election as an inspector, inspector-in-training, or rover. Possess valid California driver’s license and vehicle insurance.

Compensation: $13.01-14.38 per hour

Rover

Duties: Deliver election supplies to voter assistance center polling facilities.

Time Commitment: Approximately 20 hours from October 31 – November 3. No training required.

Qualifications (preferred): No experience required. Possess valid California driver’s license and vehicle insurance.

Compensation (4-day): $266.50.

Compensation (1-day): $130.

Clerk

Duties: Assists with setup and closing; and performs Election Day assignments.

Time Commitment: Approximately 50 hours from October 31 – November 3. Training required.

Qualifications (preferred): Worked a minimum of three elections.

Compensation (4-day): $430. Paid training.

Compensation (1-day on November 3 only): $130. Paid training.

Ballot Transporter

Duties: Travels to assigned ballot drop off locations to collect and return voted ballots to the Office of Elections.

Time Commitment: Approximately 2-4 hours per day from October 5 – November 3. No training required.

Qualifications: No experience required. Possess valid California driver’s license and vehicle insurance.

Compensation: $20 per day. Mileage reimbursement.

Election Night Worker

Duties: Assists the Office of Election after the polls close to receive and processes materials delivered from the voter assistance center teams.

Time Commitment: Approximately 5 hours on November 3. No training required.

Qualifications: No experience required. Must be an employee with the County of Humboldt.

Compensation: $91
