Share Public Comment on Proposal to Improve Accessibility at Clam Beach County Park

The County of Humboldt is seeking public comment for the proposed installation of a 5-foot-wide polyester mat along the beach access corridor at the northern parking lot of Clam Beach County Park. The purpose of this proposed project is to enable individuals with mobility disabilities to travel to the high tide line of the beach.

 About the accessibility mat:

The mat would consist of a series of removable and adjustable segments. A removable access mat is proposed, rather than a fixed structure, to reduce environmental and aesthetic impacts and to provide more flexibility for adjustments in response to changing conditions. The mat requires ongoing maintenance and adjustments to account for high tides and blowing sands.

The mat is designed to allow horses and emergency vehicles to cross and travel, and the proposed project at Clam Beach County Park includes maintaining a path of bare sand at least five feet wide next to the mat. Similar beach access mats are in place at Muir Beach and Stinson Beach within Golden Gate National Recreational Area and several beaches in Southern California.

For more information, please review the exhibits for this proposed project which include more details on the mat’s proposed location and alignment.

This proposed project is part of the county’s continued efforts to provide recreational access for all visitors to the greatest possible extent and to bring all county-owned and leased facilities into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Community members are welcome to provide feedback and comment on the proposed beach access mat by emailing ADA@co.humboldt.ca.us or calling (707) 445-7266. Public comment may also be mailed to the following address: County Administrative Office, Attn: Travis I. Smith, 825 5th Street, Room 112, Eureka, CA 95501. Public comment will be accepted until Friday, June 17.

The County of Humboldt is committed to providing equal access to all county programs, services, and activities regardless of ability. Please visit the county’s ADA Compliance web page to learn more.
