[ARCHIVED] Virtual Groundbreaking Ceremony To Be Held for New Garberville Campus Complex

garberville complex construction

The County of Humboldt will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 2 for the start of construction of the new $2.6 million Garberville Campus Complex. By replacing the current buildings, the modular complex will serve as a more modern, energy-efficient community center for southern Humboldt residents with a library, Sheriff’s substation and conference room.

The ceremony will be held via Zoom to observe state and local COVID-19 safety protocols and will begin at noon. Members of the public are welcome to attend. Link information is at the bottom of this notice.

“We’re excited for this new complex that will be accessible to all,” said 2nd District Supervisor and board Chairwoman Estelle Fennell. “After years of planning and hard work, the county has invested money and resources into this project that will provide much needed services for the community and will be such an improvement over the facilities we have had to live with and work in for so long.”

The new facility will be nearly 5,000 square feet and the library will feature accessible computer workstations, high-speed wireless internet access, a multi-media projector for presentations and movie viewing, a children’s section, and a contemporary reading/study area.

The Garberville Campus Complex is the first in the county’s efforts to move more of its services to the campus-style model. By combining more public services into single locations the county not only saves money from utility costs and building maintenance, the community is served better by having to travel less distance to access services. The impact on the environment cannot be overlooked, either, as newer buildings will be more energy efficient than the current, and it lessens the number of miles community members and staff will have to drive to get to county facilities.

During construction of the Garberville facility, the library will be offering limited services starting September 15, from Tuesday-Saturday at 727 Cedar Street. The Bookmobile will also be parked in front of the Garberville Post Office on the first four Thursday’s of the month and a book drop-off will be temporarily located at Ray’s Food Place. Also, there is a Department of Health & Human Services facility across the street that will have free public access Wi-Fi that the community can use.

The facility’s conference room can be utilized for a variety of purposes including a meeting location for the Garberville Veterans as well as other county programs. The complex will have centralized public Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant restrooms, a new parking lot and site lighting. Upgrades to the utilities such as electrical, water, gas, fiber optic internet communications and waste-water upgrades are critical design elements to the project.

The Sheriff’s office will continue to provide services to the southern region at their current location until they move into their new substation that includes an improved office layout and design, an ADA accessible public lobby, an interview room, enhanced features that promote the safety of the public and the deputies and a generator on the site that will provide emergency power.

The project contract was awarded to Adams Commercial General Contracting, Inc. of Eureka. Six local subcontractors will be working on this project that is scheduled to be completed in February, 2021.
