State law allows voters who missed their voter registration deadline on Oct. 22 to register on a later date and vote the same day. Called Conditional Voter Registration and Provisional Voting, the Humboldt County Office of Elections will be offering this service to eligible voters who missed the 15-day registration deadline, or for those who haven’t had an opportunity to update their address information for the upcoming election.
In order to register to vote after Oct. 22, individuals must visit the Humboldt County Elections Office, complete a voter registration form, and receive a provisional ballot. Voters will be eligible to cast their vote the same day they register, and this service will be offered all the way up until Election Day, Nov. 6.
Under this law, once the county elections official processes the voter registration form, determines the individual’s eligibility to register, and validates the individual’s information, including confirming the voter has not voted elsewhere in the current election, the registration becomes permanent and the provisional ballot is counted.
Individuals can register to vote online at www.registertovote.ca.gov prior to going to the Humboldt County Office of Elections to vote a provisional ballot. While voters who register past the deadline will not be able to vote at their traditional polling place, they will not lose their opportunity to cast their ballot.
The Humboldt County Office of Elections is located at 2426 6th Street, Eureka, and is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to Noon, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. On Election Day, Nov. 6, the Office of Elections is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. For questions or additional information, call (707) 445-7481.
As you may know, Measure O is on your local ballot. Measure O is Humboldt County’s Public Safety & Essential Services renewal measure that, if extended, would continue to provide locally-controlled funding that cannot be taken by the state to maintain services such as emergency response times, 24-hour sheriff’s patrols, road repair and children’s services. As an extension measure, Measure O renews voter-approved funding without raising tax rates.
