On 06-11-2015, at approximately 6:20 p.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Redway Post Office (3400 Redwood Drive) to investigate the report of a found firearm.
Upon arrival, a Sheriff’s Deputy spoke to a postal employee who reported that an unknown suspect placed a firearm in the drop box located in front of the Post Office.
The Deputy took possession of the firearm, a 9mm handgun, and found that it was in poor condition. The firearm was unloaded and was inoperable. The firearm was not reported stolen and was not registered. It is unknown at this time who or why someone placed the firearm in the drop box.
The Sheriff’s Office has contacted a United States Postal Inspector who will be conducting follow up investigation.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public of proper firearms disposal. If you have a firearm that you would like to turn in, contact your local law enforcement agency and make arrangements to have the firearm collected.
