[ARCHIVED] EOD Team investigation

On March 9, 2019, at about 10:30 a.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 1800 block of Myrtle Avenue, in the county’s jurisdiction of Eureka, for the report of suspicious bottles observed near the roadway.

Deputies arrived on scene and located a plastic bottle, which had expanded approximately two times it’s normal size and contained an unknown substance inside. Deputies also located a second, damaged, bottle.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team arrived on scene to further investigate. Out of an abundance of caution, Myrtle Avenue between 18th and 19th Streets was closed to all traffic. Humboldt Bay Fire and the California Highway Patrol responded to assist.

EOD deputies rendered the bottle safe. Representatives with the Department of Health and Human Services’ Environmental Health and HAZMAT Unit responded to the scene to further investigate the substance.

No arrests in association with the suspicious bottles have been made at this time. The investigation is ongoing.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the observant passerby who reported the suspicious sighting. All residents are asked to call the Sheriff’s Office if you see something suspicious in your neighborhood.

Anyone with information regarding this case or related criminal activity is encouraged to call the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at (707) 445-7251 or the Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip line at (707) 268-2539.
