What do these numbers mean?
Jump to Vaccine Data Information.
Data Updated Wednesday:
- Cumulative totals
- Tests – The total number of COVID-19 diagnostic tests performed on residents of Humboldt County as reported in the state surveillance system, California Reportable Disease Information Exchange (CalREDIE). This includes testing done by the Humboldt County Public Health Laboratory, commercial labs, hospitals and point-of-care testing done in clinic settings. Note, there is a lag time in reporting into the CalREDIE system. Additionally, for diagnostic purposes, acute infection is diagnosed with swab-based (nasal) testing. Antibody testing is not used for diagnosing acute infection and not included in these totals.
- Confirmed – The number of test-confirmed positive cases since the pandemic began, including people who have recovered from the illness.
- Recovered – The number of confirmed cases who are no longer in isolation, meaning they have met Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria for release, including absence of fever for at least three days without use of fever-reducing medicine, improvement in symptoms and have had 10 days or more since onset of symptoms.
- Deaths – The number of people who have died after being diagnosed with COVID-19.
- Hospitalizations – The total number of people with confirmed cases of COVID-19 who have been hospitalized since the pandemic began, including people who have been released.
- Total Vaccine Doses Administered – The total number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered by all approved vaccinators in Humboldt County as reported by the California Immunization Registry (CAIR).
- % of Population Partially Vaccinated – The percentage of Humboldt County residents who have received one dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine series as reported by CAIR.
- % of Population Fully Vaccinated – The percentage of Humboldt County residents who have received both doses of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine series or one dose of a single-dose COVID-19 vaccine as reported by CAIR.
- Confirmed Cases by Test Type
- PCR+ – The number of COVID-19 diagnostic, or polymerase chain reaction (PCR), tests performed on residents of Humboldt County as reported in the state surveillance system, CalREDIE.
- Antigen+ – The number of COVID-19 antigen tests performed on residents of Humboldt County as reported in the state surveillance system, CalREDIE.
- Weekly totals
- Tests – The number of COVID-19 diagnostic tests performed on residents of Humboldt County as reported in CalREDIE the previous day.
- Confirmed – The number of test-confirmed positive cases since the previous report, including people who have recovered from the illness. This includes cases confirmed by either PCR or antigen testing.
- Deaths – The number of people who have died after being diagnosed with COVID-19.
- Running Totals
- Confirmed(PCR+) - The total number of PCR-confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 over time by report date.
- Episode (PCR+) - The total number of PCR-confirmed positive cases over time by episode date, which is an epidemiologic convention to best estimate the actual infection onset date. It assigns the case to the earliest of the following dates available for each case: symptom onset, disease report, laboratory confirmation or laboratory test date.
- Recovered - The total number of confirmed cases over time who are no longer in isolation, meaning they have met Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria for release, including absence of fever for at least three days without use of fever-reducing medicine, improvement in symptoms and have had 10 days or more since onset of symptoms. This category potentially includes those with continuing morbidity from their disease but are considered no longer infectious.
- Deaths - The total number of people who have died after being diagnosed with COVID-19.
- Hospitalizations - The total number of people with confirmed cases of COVID-19 who have been hospitalized since the pandemic began, including people who have been released.
- Public Health Laboratory supply and testing capacity - The approximate number of testing kits that are complete and ready to be administered. This number is decreased by testing and increased as additional supplies are acquired.
- Public Health Laboratory turnaround time - The estimated amount of time it takes for submitted samples to be tested and reported out to the submitter.
- Positivity rate (over past week) - The percent of positive tests relative to the total number of tests resulted in the past week. This number will differ from that reported by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), which uses data with a seven-day lag.
- Transmission summary
- Contact to a known case - An individual found to have been in direct contact with someone who tested positive for the virus.
- Community transmission - Spread without travel or known contact to any other confirmed case.
- Travel acquired - An individual who is believed to have acquired the infection while traveling outside of Humboldt County.
- Under investigation - Confirmed case whose means of transmission has not yet been determined.
- Epidemiological curve (PCR+) - The number of PCR-confirmed positive cases each day over time. Cases are entered by infection onset date rather than reporting date.
- Age distribution - The number of total individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 grouped by age.
- Hospitalization rate by age group among positive cases – The percentage of people within a particular age group who have been hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19.
- Death rate by age group among positive cases - The percentage of people within a particular age group who have died after testing positive for COVID-19.
- Cumulative positive test rate
- Current infection (diagnostic) - The percent of positive diagnostic tests (e.g. rtPCR) relative to the total number of tests run on Humboldt County residents since the pandemic began.
- Previous infection (antibody) - The percent of positive antibody tests relative to the total number of antibody tests run on Humboldt County residents, for which results are available. A positive antibody test may indicate previous exposure to COVID-19 but does not confirm immunity.
- Geographic distribution- The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 per region. The three reporting regions of Humboldt County are:
- Northern Humboldt - Extends south from Humboldt’s County’s border with Del Norte County (North) to Highway 299 (South).
- Greater Humboldt Bay Area - Extends south from Highway 299 (North) to Highway 36 (South).
- Southern Humboldt - Extends south from Highway 36 (North) to Humboldt County’s southern border with Mendocino County.
- Case doubling time - The number of days it takes for the number of cases to double.
- Percent increase in cases from previous week - The percent by which the number of cases detected has increased since the previous week.
- Case Count by ZIP Code – The number of confirmed cases by USPS ZIP code, which is assigned based on a person’s permanent residence. The table shows a case count ranging from 0 to 5 until an area surpasses 5 total cases, at which time the total confirmed count will be displayed.
- Race distribution among positive cases - Race as self-reported for each test sample. Data is not available for all individuals tested, and cases with unknown race are excluded.
- Ethnicity distribution among positive cases - Ethnicity as self-reported for each test sample. Data is not available for all individuals tested, and cases with unknown ethnicity are excluded.
- Estimated percent of population tested for current infection and estimated rate of confirmed cases (per 100,000) - The number of COVID-19 diagnostic tests performed per 100,000 people. This includes testing done by the Humboldt County Public Health Laboratory, commercial labs, hospitals and point-of-care testing done in clinic settings. Note there is a lag time in reporting into the CalREDIE system. Population estimates are based on data from the United States Census Bureau. Rates per 100,000 are calculated by dividing the total number of tests performed by the population of the jurisdiction and multiplying the result by 100,000.
- Mean age - The average age of all the individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19. Average age is calculated by adding all the ages of individuals together and dividing by the number of cases.
- Gender distribution - The gender of individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19. Total cases, shown by percentage.
- Symptom distribution - The percent of positive cases reporting each symptom or altogether absence of symptoms.

*Data used by the state to determine tier assignment. Local and state numbers rarely align because local data is updated daily, whereas the state’s data is calculated over a seven-day period with a seven-day lag and is typically updated each Tuesday.
**The state’s “Blueprint for a Safer Economy” includes a Health Equity Metric, which requires having similar positivity rates across a county to demonstrate that no community is disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. Meeting this metric is necessary before movement into a less restrictive tier, and in some instances may allow earlier movement. Read more about the Health Equity Metric.
