The Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for all major felony investigations. This division consists of two units: The Detective Bureau and the Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU). All of the investigators assigned to this unit are located in the main station and are supervised by a lieutenant.
The Detective Bureau consists of a detective sergeant, five detectives, one evidence technician, and a secretary. The detectives investigate major crimes such as child abuse, homicide, rape, robbery, burglary, arson, and other serious felonies.
Drug Enforcement Unit
The Drug Enforcement unit consists of a sergeant, two deputies, a part-time evidence technician, and a secretary. This unit is equipped with four-wheel-drive vehicles. These allow the officers to respond to the most remote areas of the county where they are often needed.
These officers do not only work drug crimes; they are among the first responders to Search and Rescue scenes and crowd control situations. They also assist the public during natural and man-made disasters. DEU deputies also work with the detectives and the Humboldt County Drug Task Force during major investigations.
Funding & CAMP
The Drug Enforcement Unit of the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office is mainly funded by grants from the state and federal government. The unit is comprised of Sheriff's sergeants and field deputies. During peak times of the marijuana growing season the DEU deputies coordinate their efforts with members of Campaign Against Marijuana Planting (CAMP). This cooperative effort utilizes helicopters and up to 35 drug enforcement officers from the State of California to combat the problem this county has with marijuana cultivation.
