Set in Italy and loosely based on the memoir with the same title by Frances Mayes, this film version stars Diane Lane as a struggling writer who impulsively travels to Tuscany and buys a villa to get away from a disastrous divorce at home. There follow glorious scenes of the Italian landscape and fascinating moments of multicultural confusion as the villa is repaired and recreated into the writer's dream home. Relationship drama, gay friends, romantic interludes plus a happy-in-the-end teenage marriage add assorted emotional elements to the story not found in the memoir. Star Diane Lane won a Golden Globe for this romantic comedy.

Local author Richard Platz reads from Bristlecone, his most recent novel, and signs copies of his books. He says "For over forty years I’ve lived and worked in Blue Lake, CA, near the western terminus of Highway 299. But ever since I first gazed down from the crest of the South Warner Wilderness on a backpacking trip and beheld the Surprise Valley, my secret fascination has been with the eastern end of that lonely highway. The vision has churned inside my mind for a quarter century, but now has been released. My most recent novel, entitled Bristlecone, is set in this fragile narrow sliver of land caught between the snow-capped Warners and the jackrabbit and greasewood wasteland of Nevada’s basin and range. It asks the question 'What if your freedom to travel were taken away?'
