November 1, 2018, 6:00 PM - 7:45 PM @ Arcata Branch Library
Directed by Jodie Foster, Home for the Holidays is a funny, adult take on a dysfunctional holiday with families as they really are - struggling to reconcile their connection to and love for people they misunderstand and dislike. Claudia Larson's (Holly Hunter) life is a mess. She goes home for Thanksgiving to her chain-smoking mom (Anne Bancroft), oblivious dad (Charles Durning), martyr sister, Joanne (Cynthia Stevenson), gay brother, Tommy (Robert Downey, Jr), and others. A giant turkey, loud children, built-up resentment, and alcohol lead to a colossal family breakdown. This is not Norman Rockwell, but it is a hilarious, humane look at flawed families trying to figure things out.

Do you want to improve your reading? Do you know someone who needs to learn to read? Reading is essential not only as a leisure activity but for success in all aspects of everyday life. Key areas where reading is very important include finding employment, finding housing, and using social services. Should you sign a cell phone agreement or apartment lease if you can’t read it? How do you fill out a job application without being able to fully understand the job description and employee responsibilities? In Humboldt County, an estimated 13,800 adults are functionally illiterate; they read below a fifth-grade level. Another 23,000 people in our county read below an eighth-grade level. Since 1985, Humboldt Literacy Project has been matching adult learners with trained tutors. Stop by and find out how you can be a part of it!

Humboldt County is considering amendments to the Humboldt Bay Area Plan (HBAP) and Coastal Zoning Regulations (CZRs) that may change the land use designation and zone district on some Industrial/Coastal-Dependent (MC) lands to reduce the inventory of these properties. A recent study suggests there is an over-supply of these lands, and because the MC zoning severely limits the allowed uses, it may be in the public interest for the County to change the zoning for some MC properties to facilitate development on them. The County may also expand the number of allowed uses in the MC zone or make other changes to the zone to facilitate development on these properties.

The Invention of Wings is Sue Monk Kidd's masterpieces of courage, hope, and the will to speak truth, all viewed through the entwined lives of the Sarah and Angelina Grimke and their nineteenth-century Charleston-plantation slaves, Hetty "Handful" and her mother, Charlotte. Their shared quest for independent, guilt-free, love-touched lives over four decades is rocked by cataclysm. The Grimke sisters become early pioneers in the abolition and women's rights movements, but not without great loss and sorrow, courage and self-discovery, ostracism and betrayal. This is a storytelling triumph that fully confronts the debilitating wound of slavery on Americans through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression touch every heart.

Her grandmother offers wisdom, and Maui, a powerful spirit of her people, becomes Moana's teacher as she and her pet rooster face monsters, pirates, and storms at sea.
