Every November, thousands of people worldwide commit to writing a 50,000 word novel in just 30 days for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). Join the Humboldt County Writers for fun local events, writing resources, and support and encouragement throughout the month. This year, Arcata Library teams up with the local NaNoWriMo region to host Friday night writing sessions. Meet your fellow novelists, participate in writing exercises, and chat about your projects.
Your story matters - this November, it's time to write it.

For beginners! These classes are set up to teach the basics to adults with little-to-no computer experience - enough to help you find your way around and be comfortable on a computer. College of the Redwoods Adult Ed teachers offer these free classes at the library. They will bring computers to use at the class, or you are welcome to bring your own laptop if you prefer.

Babies and their families are invited to share songs, rhymes, bouncing games, finger plays, and short stories at this early literacy event. Following the program, there's time for play with developmentally appropriate toys and socializing for both parents and children. The program is designed for children aged 3-24 months, and occurs on the first and third Friday of each month.

College of the Redwood Adult Ed offers FREE classes on American Sign Language at the library! This class is for anyone interested in learning ASL including: family, friends, teachers, caregivers, paraprofessionals of the deaf and non-verbal signers. No need to pre-register, just come on by! Feel free to attend every week, or pop in when you can.

The Humboldt County Planning & Building Dept will host a public forum in Garberville to discuss the formation of a Southern Humboldt Municipal Advisory Committee.
A Municipal Advisory Committee (MAC) consists of community leaders who are nominated to represent a defined unincorporated area. As defined in California Government Code, the primary purpose of a MAC is to formally advise the Board of Supervisors on County matters, such as land use planning efforts, public works projects and health services, that impact the communities they represent.
We invite you to share your vision for a Southern Humboldt MAC. What topics will the Committee focus on? How will Committee members be chosen? What areas will the MAC represent? Where and when will meetings take place? Join us to weigh in on these questions and more.

Mary Oliver (1935-2019) said, 'When you write a poem, you write it for anybody and everybody.' Perhaps that is why she is often referred to as America's most beloved poet, despite critics' disparaging reviews about her old-fashioned topics of nature, beauty and God. She won the Pulitzer Prize, however, in 1984 for American Primitive, and the National Award in 1992 for New and Selected Poems. The Book Group will share favorite poems and lines.
