If you are interested in advising Humboldt County’s Public Works Department on the management of the McKay Community Forest, consider applying to be part of the McKay Community Forest Advisory Group.

The McKay Community Forest Advisory Group shares community perspectives, identifies needs and opportunities, provides feedback on proposed actions and make recommendations related to the McKay Community Forest.

In addition to five at-large positions, the McKay Community Forest Advisory Group consists of six permanent positions reserved for representatives from the Wiyot Tribe, Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria, City of Eureka, Humboldt Trails Council, Green Diamond Resource Company and U.C. Cooperative Extension

Applications are currently being accepted for the five at-large positions, which means applicants may reside in any county district to be considered. The term for the at-large positions is one-year, and members can re-apply to serve for more than one year

Application Process

Applications are due on by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2024 and can be found on the county’s McKay Community Forest webpage. Completed applications should be emailed to mckayforest@co.humboldt.ca.us

Five at-large members of the advisory group will be selected by the Humboldt County Director of Public Works based on the applicant’s experience related to one or more of the community forest management goals. These goals include forest stewardship, environmental values, working forest, public access and recreation, community involvement, public safety and education.

Community members with experience participating in collaborative frameworks are encouraged to apply, and considerations for ensuring diverse perspectives will be made during the selection process.

2024 Meeting Schedule

Meetings will be held in the City of Eureka’s Adorni Center Conference Room, located at 1011 Waterfront Dr. in Eureka. Meetings are open to the public and will be held on the following dates, from 3:30 to 5 p.m.:

  •  Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024
  • Tuesday, May 14, 2024
  • Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2024
  • Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024

About the McKay Community Forest

The McKay Community Forest is located southeast of Eureka along the urban-forest interface near Myrtletown, Cutten and Ridgewood Heights. A parking area and trailhead on Northridge Rd. provides access to the first set of trails, and more trails and access points are planned.

The community forest is envisioned as a place that enhances quality of life by providing opportunities to experience a diverse, dynamic and productive forest. The forest is managed for multiple purposes including public access and recreation, sustainable timber harvest and watershed and resource conservation. Revenues generated through timber harvest will offset the costs of management and maintenance and fund the development of trails, access points, and other amenities.

For more information, please visit the McKay Community Forest webpage or call 707-445-7741.
