Humboldt County Public Works Roads Division is hiring for a Road Maintenance Worker I/II.

Under general supervision, performs both routine and skilled heavy, physical work in the maintenance, repair and construction of roads; operates a variety of vehicles, equipment and hand and power tools; performs related work as assigned.

Road Maintenance Worker I is the entry level class in this road maintenance series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in road maintenance, repair and construction. This class is alternately staffed with Road Maintenance Worker II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher level class.

Road Maintenance Worker II is the skilled working level class in this series. Incumbents are expected to perform a wide range of general road maintenance duties.  This class is distinguished from Road Maintenance Worker III in that the latter operates specialized heavy equipment, such as graders, low beds, dozers, gradalls and crusher equipment.            

QUALIFICATIONS
            NOTE: The level and scope of the knowledge and skills listed below are related to job duties as defined under Distinguishing Characteristics.

Knowledge of:
  •     
  • Techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair and construction of roads.    
  • Operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment used in road construction and maintenance.    
  • Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment common to the field.    
  • Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
Skill in:
  •     
  • Operating road equipment such as trucks, rollers, loaders and backhoes.    
  • Operating and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in the work.    
  • Properly placing cones, barricades and warning devices and directing traffic flow at job sites.    
  • Performing heavy physical labor.    
  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions.    
  • Exercising independent judgment and initiative without close supervision.    
  • Keeping accurate records and preparing simple reports.
Other Requirements:

Must possess a valid California driver's license. Must obtain a Class B driver's license within 120 days for the I level and 30 days for the II level. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to l00 pounds and to perform sustained heavy physical labor. Must be willing to work out of doors in all weather conditions, to work with exposure to traffic and to work overtime and off hours shifts in emergency situations.

Desirable Education and Experience:
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills outlined above is:

Road Maintenance Worker I: Six months of work experience as a laborer in construction or maintenance work.

Road Maintenance Worker II: In addition to the above, one year of experience in the construction and maintenance of roads at a level equivalent to the County's class of Road Maintenance Worker I.            


BENEFITS:

RETIREMENT: The County participates in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS), local miscellaneous; 1st tier 2.7% @ 55, 2nd tier 2% @ 55, 3rd tier 2% @62. The County also participates in Social Security.

MEDICAL /DENTAL/VISION INSURANCE: The County participates in the CalPERS health insurance program, providing several options for employees; the County pays nearly all of the employee premium and a portion of dependent coverage. The County also provides a dental and vision plan with premium for the employee and family paid in full by the County.

VACATION: Full-time employees earn 12 days per year (one day after one month of employment); three weeks after three years; four weeks after ten years; five weeks after fifteen years; and six weeks after twenty years. Part-time employees earn vacation on a pro-rated basis.

HOLIDAYS: 14 paid days per year (includes 2 personal holidays). 

SICK LEAVE: Employees earn 12 days per year (unlimited accumulation).

SPECIAL LEAVES: Leaves of absence with pay for illness or death in the employees' immediate family may be approved. 

LIFE INSURANCE: $10,000 in life insurance paid by County with employee option to purchase up to $500,000.

LONGEVITY: 5% salary increase upon completion of 10 consecutive years of County service. Additional 5% salary increase upon completion of 20 consecutive years of County service.

EDUCATION EXPENSES: The County offers an educational reimbursement program for tuition fees and the cost of books (up to a maximum per year) for job related courses.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION: A voluntary employee paid deferred compensation plan is available.

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: County paid counseling services provided for employee and dependents.
