Pedestrian Crossing Signals on Central Avenue

Pedestrian crossings just got a little safer now with the installation of new Pedestrian Countdown Crossing Signals along all of the intersections on Central Avenue. The new signals show a countdown to warn pedestrians when the signal is about to change and is no longer safe to cross. The intersections of Pickett Road at Central Ave and City Center Road at Central Ave also have "chirping / talking" signals to assist people with disabilities in crossing safely. 

Humboldt County Public Works, Roads / Traffic Division began work on Monday, August 20 and completed on Tuesday, August 21, with a total of 41 new countdown signals being installed. This project was funded by a grant from the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).

Realigned and Restriped Crosswalks in McKinleyville

Over the last couple months, Humboldt County Public Works - Roads / Sign Shop has been busy installing, re-striping and realigning several crosswalks in McKinleyville. The first being at the intersection of Murray Road and Little Pond Street. This intersection is an outlet for students living north of McKinleyville High School to get to school. It was a dangerous journey until now. Through Measure Z funding a crosswalk was installed with flashing pedestrian signals, ADA compliant curbs and mid street islands and signal buttons.

The next intersection to get a transformation is at Hiller Road and Fischer Avenue. A popular crossing for people enjoying the Hammond Trail and Hiller Park. The trail access on the south side of the intersection was widened and paved to allow adequate room for the crosswalk to be inline with the north side of the intersection. The old intersection lines were ground off and new Thermo Plastic lines and lettering were installed to add long lasting reflective street markings.

The last intersection is at Central Avenue and Railroad Drive, the juncture to McKinleyville Middle School. The old crosswalks were worn down and narrow. Humboldt County Public Works - Roads Sign Shop ground off the old crossing lines and laid down 9 foot long Thermo Plastic lines creating a wider, safer and reflective passage for pedestrians.
