Adult Literacy Tutoring

The Humboldt County Library, in partnership with the Humboldt Literacy Project (HLP), offers free, confidential one-on-one tutoring for adults who want to strengthen their reading, writing, or English-language skills. Through this program, adult learners are paired with trained volunteer tutors who provide personalized support based on each learner’s goals. Tutoring sessions are flexible, encouraging progress at a comfortable pace and in a welcoming, judgment-free environment.

About the Program

Humboldt Literacy Project began in 1981 at what was then Humboldt State University’s English Department and became a nonprofit in 1985. Around that time the California State Library launched the Library Literacy Services program, and the Humboldt County Library partnered up with HLP to deliver those services locally. Since then, our collaboration has focused on helping adults build literacy, raising awareness of the impact of illiteracy, and offering engaging, effective programs for learners of all backgrounds.

Who is This For?

This tutoring program is designed for adults (18 +), whether you want to:

  • Improve everyday reading or writing skills
  • Gain confidence in English language use
  • Support your children with homework by improving your own literacy
  • Prepare for job tasks or community participation.

All adults are welcome in a respectful, non-judgmental environment where learning is centered on you and your goals.

How It Works

  • Fill out the online intake form from the HLP website or call (707) 445-3655 to register your interest.
  • Schedule a 20- to 30-minute intake session to talk about your goals and preferences.
  • Get matched with a volunteer tutor.
  • Because the program is supported by California Library Literacy Services, services are 100% free.
  • You’ll need to handle your own transport/communication/scheduling; the tutor brings the materials and expertise. Wait times may apply, and we’ll keep you informed.

Become a Tutor

Would you like to give back to your community? HLP welcomes volunteers for one-on-one tutoring with adult learners. No teaching credentials are required.

How volunteering works:

  • You’ll complete an online application from the HLP website, attend an orientation, and review the HLP's rights and responsibilities guide.
  • Once matched, you’ll meet with your learner for 60-90 minutes, one or two times a week.
  • HLP provides training, materials, and ongoing support through monthly workshops.

Not interested in tutoring? You can also help with events, serve on our board, volunteer for family literacy programs, or donate/sponsor our work. Every contribution strengthens the free literacy services offered to adults in Humboldt County.
