Below are the most asked-about library check-out and renewal policies. 

Library Cards



Permanent Library Cards are free of charge to Humboldt County residents with a permanent local address. 

An Express Library Card is available without such an address.

There is a $4.00 fee to replace a lost card.

A library card allows you to check out materials, use online library services, and more.

  • (books with holds check out for 2 weeks)

Books or Music on CD

  • 4 weeks loan period
  • 2 renewals

Bookmobile Borrowing


  • Unlimited books
  • 5 movies
  • 5 BCDs
  • 5 CDs


Renewal & Return of Library Material



All Humboldt County Library material can be renewed or returned at any branch.  It doesn't matter where you checked it out.

You can renew online, in person, or by phone at any branch or at 707-269-1915.

You can renew items online by using the View Your Record function in the library catalog.

Library items can be renewed twice, unless there is a hold request on the item.
