Community Feedback Wanted: Review and Comment on the Draft Local Hazard Mitigation Plan

Sheriff's Office Posted on May 09, 2025 | Last Updated on May 09, 2025

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services (OES) is updating the Humboldt County Multijurisdictional Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) and invites you to review the draft plan and share your input.

The updated plan advances the county’s ongoing work to reduce potential risks from natural disasters. Originally developed in 2007, the hazard mitigation plan is regularly updated to stay current, comply with the federal Disaster Mitigation Act and maintain the county’s eligibility for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding. The last update was in 2019, and the 2025 plan continues this work by outlining resources, information and strategies to enhance disaster preparedness and reduce risks from natural hazards.

It is no secret that natural disasters regularly impact the North Coast. From winter storms to floods, earthquakes, fires and landslides, residents continue to be affected throughout the year by natural disasters. Humboldt County OES is collaborating with local cities, Tribal governments and invested parties, municipalities, agencies and community members to update the hazard mitigation plan and reduce the risks local communities face from natural disasters.

Community input is critical in order to create a plan that meets the public’s needs.
