Humboldt County District Attorney Maggie Fleming announced that the DA Victim Witness Program has been selected to receive funding through a competitive grant from the Unserved/Underserved Victim Advocacy and Outreach (UV) Program of the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES). The grant will provide $175,000 per year of support for 5-years (with the submission of mandatory annual reports and re-applications).
The grant will support the District Attorney’s Office efforts to: 1/respond to the emotional and physical needs of crime victims; 2/help victims understand and participate in the criminal justice system; and 3/enhance the safety and security of victims.
The primary purpose of the grant is to increase access to culturally appropriate victim services for unserved/underserved victims of crime. This will be accomplished by creating new programs and enhancing existing programs to specifically address the needs of unserved/underserved populations and by increasing outreach efforts. DA Fleming stated, “Receipt of this funding is evidence that the State recognizes our commitment to reach all county residents that could benefit from assistance for victims; this support will significantly enhance our efforts. I appreciate the efforts taken by the Victim Witness office team to apply for this grant in order to obtain funds that will help us provide valuable services to our community.”
