NEWS RELEASE

March 27, 2019

Today a jury found 42-year-old Jeremy Notman guilty of arson of an inhabited structure and possession of methamphetamine paraphernalia.

The case arose from an incident in the early morning hours of December 18th, 2018. The defendant used a propane-powered flame throwing device to set fire to an apartment complex on 6th Street in Eureka, then fled the scene. Eureka Police Department (EPD) subsequently identified him after additional investigation connected him to the arson. The successful prosecution of Mr. Notman relied on several witnesses who testified at trial, including residents of the apartment complex, EPD Senior Detective Ron Harpham, EPD Sgt. Eddie Wilson, EPD Ofc. Andrew Endsley, and EPD Ofc. Jonathan Eckert. Captains Bret Banducci and Michael Landry of the Humboldt Bay Fire Department deserve recognition for leading the team that extinguished the fire and conducting the arson investigation. The District Attorney’s Office also appreciates the time and effort of the jury.

Deputy District Attorney Tobias Hasler prosecuted the case with the assistance of District Attorney Investigator Marvin Kirkpatrick. Deputy Public Defender Casey Russo represented the defendant.  Judge Neel presided over the 2-week trial and will sentence the defendant on May 16, 2019.  He faces a potential maximum sentence of 8 years in state prison.
