The Humboldt County Community Health Assessment (CHA) survey is open now through April 15, and you are invited to weigh in by visiting livewellhumboldt.org.
The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and provides an opportunity for participants to express what needs should be prioritized to improve the health of the community.
The CHA helps tell the community’s story – what makes us healthy and what problems we face. By collecting information and listening to people who live in the community, it is easier to see what needs to get better and how to make the community healthier together.
The CHA shows problems, like not enough dentists and lack of housing, and also points out helpful things, like access to parks, libraries and clinics. Answers to the CHA survey help local leaders understand what the community considers the most important problems so they can work together to deliver programs and services that help meet people's needs.
The Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services, Public Health and community partners use the CHA to update the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP), and as a resource for planning and policy making.
In the 2018 CHA, community members said that suicide was one of the biggest health problems in Humboldt County. The Suicide Prevention Network, in collaboration with Public Health’s Suicide Prevention team, worked with local partners, including gun shops, to help make firearm use safer. One success was the Gun Shop Project, where more than 6,000 lockboxes were given out to help keep firearms secure.
The CHIP uses information from the CHA to set goals that help the community stay healthy and build on its strengths. Ultimately, the goal is to help all residents live their happiest, healthiest lives by delivering programs and services that help meet people's needs.
