Correctional Deputies Save Choking Inmate’s Life

Sheriff's Office Posted on March 29, 2024

Two Humboldt County correctional deputies saved an inmate’s life last week after successfully performing the Heimlich maneuver.

On March 26, 2024, during dinner service in the Humboldt County Correctional Facility, Correctional Deputy Love was working in a male housing unit and noticed an inmate who appeared to be choking. Deputy Love and his training officer Corporal Freese called for backup and Deputy Love immediately began administering the Heimlich maneuver on the choking inmate. Correctional Deputy Sutherland responded to the call for backup and assisted Deputy Love with life-saving efforts. The deputies were able to successfully dislodge the obstruction from the inmate’s airway, saving the inmate’s life. If not for the job diligence and swift actions of Deputy Love and all the responding staff this situation could have had a fatal outcome.

These efforts embody the Sheriff’s Office mission of protecting and serving our community.
