The County of Humboldt will again use an upcoming holiday as an opportunity to efficiently provide important training to employees on subjects like the Americans with Disabilities Act, ethics, discrimination and sexual harassment and more. For the fourth year in a row county offices will be closed to the public on Columbus Day, which is Monday, Oct. 14, as staff participates in this training. County offices will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Law enforcement and other critical services will not be affected by this closure.

The Humboldt County Children's Author Festival brings well-known, published authors to Humboldt County, where they visit schools to talk with students about books and the business and craft of writing, and promote the exciting idea that people create books and that children can write, as well as read. This year, 25 authors and illustrators will come from throughout the country to visit Humboldt County. They will travel to nearly 60 Humboldt County schools to talk about themselves and their work to thousands of school children. Today, meet all the authors and see their books at a public autographing session and book sale here in the Eureka Main Library.

Meet Rufus, a licensed therapy dog, and his human, Jean Ann. Rufus loves playing at the beach, digging in the garden, and listening to stories. Read to Rufus, tell him a story, or just sit with him and talk for a while. Reading to a dog is a low-pressure way for children to practice their reading skills, and fun besides! A parent or legal guardian must sign a permission form before children read with Rufus, and must accompany children to the story room.
