Inspired by the dazzling large human powered art sculptures that are featured in the 37-mile Kinetic Grand Championship on Memorial Day Weekend from Arcata to Ferndale, this creative project challenges artists to create a sculpture that can be directed through our portable tabletop racetrack using all sorts of recycled and creatively reused treasures and basic crafting supplies. Great for ages 4 and up with caregiver help, or kids 7 and up on their own. Fine to work solo or in teams.

Babies and their families are invited to share songs, rhymes, bouncing games, finger plays, and short stories at this early literacy event. Following the program, there's time for play with developmentally appropriate toys and socializing for both parents and children. The program is designed for children aged 3-24 months, and occurs on the first and third Friday of each month.

Join teaching artist Virginia Wood as we explore amazing animals! Draw your favorite animal, or use photos to collage a real or imaginary animal. Kids will learn how to develop their animal and create a space for it using the elements of art. In this second workshop children will learn how to make an animal look alive as they add shading to turn a flat animal into a form. Drop in to one session or come to all four to continue adding onto your masterpiece!

A master storyteller with a voice like buttered honey, Baba Jamal Koram will tell stories from the African tradition and from his own life that speak to the truth in all of our hearts. Learn how to protect yourself and keep yourself safe with this Self Defense Skills workshop, taught by Carrie Slack. Basic practical skills will be shared in this short workshop, for ages 14 and up. Meet Rufus, a licensed therapy dog, and his human, Jean Ann. Rufus loves playing at the beach, digging in the garden, and listening to stories. Read to Rufus, tell him a story, or just sit with him and talk for a while. Reading to a dog is a low-pressure way for children to practice their reading skills, and fun besides! A parent or legal guardian must sign a permission form before children read with Rufus, and must accompany children to the story room.
