1. Why should I wear a mask in the library?

The library is a large group setting where children and elderly people are present. The library follows public health guidelines for such settings, so that everyone can be safe visiting the library.

Masks are currently required for ALL people aged 2 and up. While you are in the library, please wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth and fits properly to filter your breath.

Curbside service is available if you prefer not to wear a mask.

2. What else is the library doing for public & staff safety?

The library is following safety and public health recommendations for employees and patrons. 

• Curbside Pick-up and Express Service procedures are designed to keep a social distance and reduce contact.  
• Food and drink inside the library are not permitted.
• Plexiglass protectors are in use at service desks.
• Books are no longer quarantined on return. New research says the risk is lower than previously thought. Instead, please follow other safety advice such as washing your hands frequently.
• High-touch surfaces are regularly cleaned and disinfected.
• Please use the hand sanitation stations when entering the library. At the Eureka Main Library, you will also see hand sanitizer in other spots around the library.

• Our safety plans have been vetted by the County Department of Public Health.

3. Can I still use Curbside Service?

Yes. All libraries continue to offer curbside service.

4. Why isn't the 2nd floor of Eureka Main Library open during Express Service?

The 2nd Floor is closed, but popular items are now downstairs. 

Our goal in Express Service is to provide safe library visits with efficient service to as many visitors as want to be here. During Express Service, popular second floor items such as magazines, movies, audiobooks and music have been moved to the first floor for your convenience. 

Volunteers who usually staff rooms upstairs have not reestablished schedules here yet, and upstairs staff can be found helping you downstairs. 

Research needs...

For those who wish to do serious historical research, Friday afternoon appointments are available while the upstairs is closed.  Limited time slots are available for use of the Humboldt Room and to have microfilm access. Library staff is always available to help if you just need a quick fact or two. 

5. When will full, normal library service start again?

We will tell you when we know. We are working to restore all library services and access soon as possible in a safe, coordinated and phased effort, starting with opening libraries for Express Service. 

We continue to follow state and local public health guidelines for operations. 

Like you, we hope that all will go well and that all libraries can safely return to full service one day soon. In the meantime, it is a joy to see your faces again for Express Service visits.
