Cooking demonstrations and a children’s seed packet giveaway and planting station are just a few of the activities for attendees to enjoy at this year’s “Nutrition in the Garden” fall harvest party.
The event, scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 9:30 a.m. to noon, is sponsored by the Fortuna Community Garden Project, Open Door Community Health Centers, Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services and Food for People. It will be held at the Fortuna Community Garden Project located at 2292 Newburg Road in Fortuna.
Many activities are planned to help participants start their own fall garden, as well as cooking demonstrations and free gifts for attendees. A “Rethink Your Drink” booth will give everyone the chance to taste flavored waters made with freshly picked ingredients from the Fortuna garden.
In the parking lot there will be a free produce market and CalFresh application assistance from the Mobile Produce Pantry. Participants will also learn how CalFresh can be used to purchase seeds and plants that grow food in one’s garden.
Fruits and vegetables are grown in the nearly two-acre Fortuna garden which donates produce to programs like Fortuna Adventist Community Services, the St. Joseph Food Pantry, the Fortuna Backpack for Kid’s program and other local organizations.
Community groups and student volunteers tend to the garden. Groups interested in working a plot at the garden should contact Steve Palecki, garden coordinator, at 707-362-9307.
