The Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) and the Lafayette Elementary School Parent Teacher Association are looking for volunteer crossing guards to help students safely get to and from school.
“Crossing guards help make school zones safer for students and their families by helping children cross the street safely, reminding drivers of the presence of pedestrians and serving as a role model for children,” said Mellody Mallick, health education specialist with DHHS.
Volunteer hours and days are flexible. Shifts are Monday through Friday from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m., Monday from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday from 2 to 3 p.m. Backups and substitutes are also needed.
“Walking and bicycling to school provides physical activity, can increase safety around schools by decreasing traffic congestion and contributes to a cleaner environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” Mallick said.
All training and equipment will be provided. For more information, please contact Mallick at 707-441-5549 or mmallick@co.humboldt.ca.us.
