Humboldt County Seeks Input on Draft Airport Land Use Compatibility Plan

ACV2

With the continued goal of promoting safety between public use airports and the communities that surround them, Humboldt County is asking for feedback on the draft 2021 Airport Land Use Compatibility Plan (ALUCP). County staff will hold a virtual community meeting on the plan on March 8 at 6 p.m., and more information on this meeting is included below.

An Initial Study was prepared to identify potentially significant impacts on the environment, and it was determined that the project will have a less than significant effect on the environment. Both the draft 2021 ALUCP and the Initial Study/Negative Declaration are available for public comment through March 15 at 5 p.m.  The planning document is an update to the state-mandated 1993 airport land use compatibility plan for the following airports in Humboldt County:

  • California Redwood Coast – Humboldt County Airport
  • Dinsmore Airport
  • Garberville Airport
  • Kneeland Airport
  • Murray Field Airport
  • Rohnerville Airport
  • Samoa Field Airport (Operated by the City of Eureka)
  • Shelter Cove Airport (Operated by the Resort Improvement District)

The ALUCP was prepared under the direction of the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors in its designated role as the Airport Land Use Commission (ALUC) for the region. While the Samoa Field Airport and Shelter Cove Airport are not county-run airports, the ALUC governs all of the public use airports in Humboldt, regardless of the agency that maintains them. The exception is for the Hoopa Airport which is operated by the Hoopa Tribe with federal oversight.  The Hoopa Airport will continue to be covered by the 1993 ALUCP.

The policies in the document are designed to promote compatibility between the Humboldt County’s public use airports and surrounding land uses. These policies provide the foundation upon which the ALUC can execute its duty to review land use development in areas around airports. Once adopted by the ALUC, the City of Eureka, City of Fortuna, and the County of Humboldt must then ensure that their General Plans are consistent with the adopted ALUCP.

The draft 2021 ALUCP and the Initial Study/Negative Declaration are available for download on the county website The deadline to submit comments on the draft plan is March 15 at 5 p.m.

A paper copy of the draft ALUCP can be viewed at:

Citizens can also learn more about the ALUCP and CEQA document by viewing an online public workshop scheduled for March 8 at 6 p.m. See the county website for information on how to attend via computer or by telephone.

The project is expected to be presented to the ALUC in early April for approval.
