Accessible Beach Wheelchairs Available for Reservation at Clam Beach County Park

People with mobility disabilities can now enjoy an up-close view of the sand and water at Clam Beach County Park with two accessible beach wheelchairs that are available free to the public. The County of Humboldt received grant funding from the California State Coastal Conservancy to purchase the beach wheelchairs, which supports the county’s commitment to providing equal access to programs, services and activities.

The Coastal Conservancy is a California state agency, established in 1976, to protect and improve natural lands and waterways, to help people enjoy the outdoors, and to sustain local economies along the coast. It acts with others to protect and restore, and increase public access to California’s coast, ocean, and coastal watersheds. Its vision is of a beautiful, restored, and accessible coast for current and future generations of Californians.

The beach wheelchairs feature short, wide wheels that make it possible to traverse soft sand and are available by reservation to individuals with mobility disabilities. The beach wheelchairs are not motorized and require an attendant for use. They will be available 7 days a week and can be picked up at the Clam Beach County Park, north parking lot at 1100 Clam Beach Road, McKinleyville.

Beach wheelchair reservations need to be made no less than 24-hours in advance by calling Humboldt County Parks at 707-445-7651 Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or after business hours at 707-498-4310. Reservations can also be made online by visiting our website. Select the beach wheelchair access link and you will be directed to a reservation page. Users or attendants of the beach wheelchair must be 18 years or older with a valid state-issued ID to present when picking up the wheelchairs.

Clam Beach County Park features 13 campsites, two campsites having accessible amenities, accessible restrooms, beach access and beach wheelchairs.
