HCSO puts a focus on Problem Oriented Policing

We believe the best way to make our community safer is by working together. That’s why the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is putting a focus on Problem Oriented Policing. Problem Oriented Policing is a proactive approach to identifying and targeting problems that contribute to crime, disorder and other community issues. By collecting and analyzing data related to ongoing criminal activity, the Sheriff’s Office can better address problem-areas of our county by implementing strategies to reduce crime and other community issues.

As part of our Problem Oriented Policing initiative, county residents and visitors are encouraged to submit a crime tip to the Sheriff’s Office via our new Online Crime Tip Form or our Crime Tip Hotline.

The new Online Crime Tip Form allows residents to submit tips for issues such as abandoned vehicles, garbage dumping, stolen property found / ongoing property theft, suspected drug house, suspicious activity, transient camps, ongoing trespassing, suspect information / location and other investigative tips. In addition to this new online form, residents can also call the Sheriff’s Crime Tip Hotline at (707) 268-2539. This hotline is a secure voicemail system that is checked every day. All tips received online and over the phone are compiled, sorted by location, and distributed to sheriff’s deputies for special analysis and follow up.

In addition to the new Online Crime Tip Form, the Sheriff’s Office has changed the way we receive online crime reports. Today we are also launching a new Online Crime Report Form. This new form allows residents and visitors to our community to report non-emergency crimes in which they are the victim. In order to use this online form, your situation must meet the following criteria: this is not an emergency; this incident occurred within the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office jurisdiction; there are no known suspects; and this did not occur on a State Freeway. Residents may also make a non-emergency crime report by calling our main line at (707) 445-7251.
