More About the Book

& why First 5 Humboldt is Giving Families a Free Copy

First 5 Humboldt, author Rees Hughes, and Backcountry Press teamed up during the pandemic to create this book. Why? To make it easy to have the joy of time spent together outdoors, especially for young children and their families. Learn about easy hikes and fun places kids love.

Find Your Happy Places

Kids have had a hard time for the past few years. The book aims to highlight and encourage three of the California Surgeon General’s stress busting strategies - experiencing nature, physical activity, and supportive relationships.

Together these strategies reduce stress hormones, reduce inflammation, and increase neuroplasticity, which are all important to improving health and well being across the lifespan. Though the height of the pandemic may be behind us, the effects of the toxic stress it caused continues for many. Through creation of this book, First 5 Humboldt hopes to provide families with a fun and useful resource to support their well being.
