All Humboldt County Libraries and the Bookmobile are closed in observance of Veterans' Day.
In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the armistice that brought an end to World War I first became official.
The United States Congress later passed a resolution with these words:
'Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed.... it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations...'
Later, after it became clear that the 'war to end all wars' had not taught the nations lasting peace, the holiday became Veterans' Day in the United States, to honor all United States veterans and their service. It's still celebrated as 'Remembrance Day' abroad.
