2:30 PM, Southern Humboldt Indians, Local History Lecture with Jerry Rohde (Zoom)

Saturday, March 4, 2023

Based on Volume 2 of Jerry's 'History of Humboldt County People and Places' series, this virtual presentation describes the six tribes that occupied southern Humboldt until the 1850s and 1860s. Indian genocide nearly eliminated all of them. Jerry shows how a handful of survivors were interviewed by ethnographers and how that knowledge of tribal history and culture was partly preserved. More than a century after they first spoke, these native voices are here to be heard.

Jerry Rohde's New Book, Southern Humboldt Indians

This volume holds the history of the six southern Humboldt County Indian tribes - the Bear Rivers (Nekannis), Mattoles, Sinkyones, Wailakis, Lassiks, and Nongatls - much of it based on unpublished sources dating from as early as the 1900s.
