What you see is not what you get. Paloma, a brilliant but fey 12-year-old, and Renée, concierge of the ritzy Parisian apartment building in which this novel is set, hide under the guise of being average - when each is anything but that. Truth and beauty are revealed when Monsieur Ozu, a Japanese businessman, moves in - the unexpected catalyst for a genuine connection between the two main characters. Author Muriel Barbery is a philosophy professor in France, and the novel is accordingly full of questions and speculations of a philosophical nature. It's also funny and touching, so that even those not intrigued with 'the meaning of life' can enjoy this read.
