6:00 PM, Arcata Library's 'A Novel Idea' Book Group, 'Kindred' (Hybrid, in Person & Zoom)

Thursday, February 23, 2023

This rich, complex fantasy – both slave memoir and historical fiction - follows 26 year-old Dana, an African-American woman living in 1976 California as she suddenly, inexplicably travels through time into antebellum Maryland, where she saves a drowning white boy only to find herself staring into the barrel of a gun. Dana just as quickly travels back to the present just in time to save herself. As the time travel episodes continue, she comes to realize the challenge she has been given.

Kindred, by Octavia ButlerThis edition's cover of Kindred features a young black woman & some rough board shacks.

'Kindred' was the first science fiction novel written by a black woman and has become a cornerstone of black American literature. Octavia Butler won both Hugo and Nebula awards, and in 1995 became the first science fiction writer to receive the MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant.
