'Hamnet' traces a parent's worst nightmare: the death of a child. Set in Stratford, England, in the late 16th century, Hamnet wrestles with the emotional, domestic, and artistic upset in the life of the world's most famous (though never named) playwright and his wife after their only son, 11-year-old Hamnet, succumbs to the bubonic plague in 1596. Four years later, the boy's father channels his grief into his masterpiece — titled with a common variant of his son's name — in which the father dies and the son lives to avenge him.
HAMNET

Hamnet is a historical novel by the Irish-British author Maggie O’Farrell. It fictionalizes the life of William Shakespeare’s family at the time of his son Hamnet’s death in 1596 and the writing of the play 'Hamlet' around 1600.
Hamnet won the 2020 Women’s Prize for Fiction, a highly-respected literary award in the United Kingdom.
