6:00 PM. Muhammad Ali's Speed & Grace! Word Humboldt Poetry Writing Workshop

Thursday, October 28, 2021

Eureka's Poet Laureate, Wil Gibson, will host the remaining two poetry workshops in this series, taking off from Muhammad Ali's dance with contradictions and his singular mystique. Free yourself to write with poetry magic from Gibson, then (if you have written something you like) you may want to enter it in the InkPeople art and poetry exhibit focusing on Ali's legacy. Later, there will be an anti-racist activism discussion as well (see link for date and details). All events in this series follow September's PBS documentary series 'Muhammad Ali' by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and David McMahon.

Speed and Grace

Poetry Writing Workshops inspired by Muhammad Ali, and led by Eureka's Poet Laureate, Wil Gibson

Speed and Grace, here Ali is posed with mouth open and fist punching forward.

Thursday 10/21 - Contradictions

Tonight's workshop focuses on heroes, hypocrisy, and contradictions. Ali was an advocate for peace who gained fame as a fighter. This workshop offers writers the opportunity to respond to the quote, 'It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I beat people up.'

Thursday 10/28 - Mystique

This workshop is focused on Ali's myth and mystique, and his quote, 'To be a great champion, you must believe you are the best. If you're not, pretend you are.'

Register for either or both workshops here.
