VITA Free Income Tax Preparation Program Starts Today

Saturday, January 23, 2021

Free tax preparation! If your income is under $66,000 and your taxes are not complex (for example, you do not have rental property, employees or inventory), pick up a packet at the Eureka Library between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. The packet helps you submit the needed information to get your taxes done. It also explains how to make a 15-minute appointment. (Masks are required and 6 foot distance will be maintained.) Your taxes will be eFiled as soon as the IRS is ready to accept them, and a copy of your return will be presented to you.

Free tax preparation by trained volunteers who give their time to help their neighbors!

It's a careful pandemic-aware program this year. Pick up a packet of instructions, then make a 15-minute appointment (mask and 6-foot distance required). All appointments are in Eureka. The number to call to make your appointment is in the packet.

There's no need to call ahead to get a VITA packet, just stop by the Eureka Library and call 269-1940 for curbside pickup during curbside service hours (11:00 AM to 4:00 PM).

Volunteer tax preparers go through a thorough training provided by the IRS. Then, they give their time to help neighbors and community members file taxes correctly, and get any tax credits they are eligible for.

In 2019, this program brought more than $9 million dollars in tax refunds back to residents in Humboldt, Sonoma, Lake, Mendocino, and Del Norte counties.

Sponsors include the Humboldt County Library, the Redwood Action Agency, and United Way of the Wine Country, as well as many other local participating groups.
