This 2019 film is an hour and a half long, and rated PG. Common Sense Media recommends it for families with children aged 11 and up. Parents say it's good for tweens but a bit cheesy for teens. Both parents and kids report being frightened by a scary scene that takes place just after two characters disappear into a closet, involving a mask - if your child is reasonably sensitive this may be the moment to take a quick break. Spoiler - a villain uses airborne nutmeg to cause hallucinations (nutmeg in large quantities is more dangerous than most of us knew) so parents may need to be prepared for this. The fraction of nutmeg in a slice of pie is no problem!

2:00 PM, Arcata Library Family Movie, Nancy Drew & the Hidden Staircase (PG)

Saturday, January 25, 2020

Nancy Drew (who, in this 2019 film, is not quite the straight arrow depicted in the original 1930 book by Mildred Wirt Benson writing as Carolyn Keene) finds herself doing public service hours after pranking a couple of schoolyard bullies. There she meets elderly Flora, the apparent victim of a haunting. Nancy teams up with Flora's young relative Helen to discover the truth about what's going on at Flora's house. Meanwhile, Nancy's father has gotten involved with local politics, and finds himself in hot water... so Nancy will have to solve two mysteries, not just one!

Mystery has met its match!
This redheaded Nancy uses her flashlight to navigate a dark, hidden passage.
