6:00 p.m. Arcata Library, A Novel Idea Book Group, Poet Mary Oliver

Thursday, November 14, 2019

Mary Oliver (1935-2019) said, 'When you write a poem, you write it for anybody and everybody.' Perhaps that is why she is often referred to as America's most beloved poet, despite critics' disparaging reviews about her old-fashioned topics of nature, beauty and God. She won the Pulitzer Prize, however, in 1984 for American Primitive, and the National Award in 1992 for New and Selected Poems. The Book Group will share favorite poems and lines.

Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

There is only one question:
how to love this world

When it's over, I want to say:
all my life I was a bride married to amazement. I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.
