Luis Alberto Urrea's novel, according to Kirkus Review, is 'a wise, funny, tragic family saga that asks what it means to be American.' The hero, Miguel Angel de la Cruz, or Big Angel, is dying. He decides to throw a final birthday party for himself. The plot thickens, though, when his mother dies first. An accomplished writer of fiction and nonfiction, Urrea bases Big Angel, on his oldest brother, who passed a month after their mother died. The de la Cruzes are a messy, complicated, loyal family: 'All we do, mija,' Big Angel tells his daughter, 'is love. Love is the answer. Nothing stops it. Not borders. Not death.' Urrea’s novel clearly celebrates the American experience and familial strength with real people struggling in a harsh world.
