September 25, 2019
5:45 PM - 7:50 PM
Time Details:
The movie is 124 minutes long (just over 2 hours). Rated PG-13. Common Sense Media recommends this film for ages 13+, partly due to a scene showing the end of a brutal lynching, scenes and words of racism, and another scene with a brief, not very revealing moment suggesting romantic sex. Also, as one parent says "it has a lot of talking and the theme is for an audience that can handle more critical thought and get enjoyment out of it."

Wednesday, September 25, 2019

Melvin B. Tolson (Denzel Washington) is a professor at Wiley College, a small African-American college in Texas. In 1935, Tolson inspired students to form the school's first debate team. The group of underdog students became an elite debate team that challenged Harvard in the national championship. Inspired by a true story, the movie includes discussions and representations of 1930s racism, including a lynching scene.
