6:00 p.m. Arcata Library, Adult Summer Book Group, The Last Stand

Thursday, August 22, 2019

The Last Stand, by David Harris, is, according to Kirkus Review, an arresting, first-rate reportage from the deep woods. Harris gives a mesmerizing, blow-by-blow account of Pacific Lumber's hostile takeover by Charles Hurwitz, and the ecological battles it triggered. He describes the sleepy town of Scotia, the pride of Pacific Lumber and its owners, the Murphy family, and how the company took care of its own (educating the children and caring for the sick), practicing sustainable yield and selective cutting until Texan Charles Hurwitz, a corporate raider, took over Pacific Lumber and clear-cut old growth to pay off his junk bond debt. Hurwitz's favorite saying was a twist on the Golden Rule: He who has the gold, rules. Harris describes what happened in the style of a good thriller, reflecting the shame of willful destruction of a thriving community and biome.
