Akeelah and the Bee lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes. Rated PG due to some strong language and difficult or sad circumstances that form the background of the story. Recommended for children 8 and up. Parents on Common Sense Media say they loved the story and so did their kids, especially the themes of friendship, loyalty, courage, plus the enthusiasm for spelling it generates. One parent says 'Yes there were a couple of words my children are not allowed to use, but they hear those words on the school bus anyway, and ... this provided an opportunity to remind them that those words are unacceptable.'
