1:00 p.m. Eureka Library, Dumb Movies with Smart People, Outbreak (rated R), with Ron Largusa.

Saturday, February 9, 2019

In a nightmarish (but cheesy) extrapolation from real events in the nonfiction book The Hot Zone, by Richard Preston, this thriller-disaster film imagines a deadly contagious disease that breaks out first in Africa, and then in a California town, threatening the entire world. Roger Ebert called this idea 'one of the great scare stories of our time, the notion that deep in the uncharted rain forests, deadly diseases are lurking, and if they ever escape their jungle homes and enter the human bloodstream, there will be a new plague the likes of which we have never seen.' 'Don't trust the government to save you' is one of the film's powerful messages, as multiple government agencies prove unwilling or unable to cope, ratcheting up the thrills. How realistic is that? We'll ask epidemiologist Ron Largusa, who's here to tell us what's really what in the real world after this film concludes.
