1:00 p.m. Eureka Library, Historical Lecture, Carla Baku's New Novel of the Chinese Expulsion

Saturday, November 3, 2018

Carla Baku will speak on her new book, "Chasing Down the Moon," a novel based on the 1885 expulsion of the Chinese from Eureka. In 1883, a young Chinese woman is sold to human traffickers and taken from her family and home in the mountains of Hunan. In San Francisco, Ya Zhen is purchased by a hotelier from the remote coastal town of Eureka, where she is forced to serve as an indentured prostitute. Ya Zhen’s escape, aided by a small group of friends, is thwarted when a terrible accident precipitates the upheaval of the entire town, and the clock starts ticking for everyone.

Two indistinct human figures stand in the surf at sunset on the book's cover.
