This book group meets monthly. Novel-readers who are 18 years and older are welcome to drop in. Participants are expected to read the featured title, and comments from those who have read the book hold special merit. No topic is off limits; there is no censorship, but the interests of the group matter. Branch librarian Susan chooses titles that are relatively new award-winners and available in paperback. Five copies are provided by FOAL for loan, in addition to those in the library collection, so check with the library if you need a copy.

6:00 p.m. Arcata Library, A Novel Idea Book Group, Independent People, by Halldor Laxness

Thursday, May 24, 2018

May's title is Independent People, by Halldor Laxness. He won the 1955 Nobel Prize in Literature for this masterpiece set in the early twentieth century but infused with Iceland's medieval epics. It follows hero Bjartur's unrelenting, grimly comic and often, horrifying pursuit of independence as a simple sheep farmer while becoming embroiled in raising an independent-minded daughter intent on gaining her own personal freedom. Their battle of wills creates a heartbreaking, intense, intimate tale.
