Criminal Investigations Division

The Criminal Investigations Division is led by Chief Kyla Baxley who reports directly to District Attorney Maggie Fleming. The primary purpose of the Criminal Investigations Division is to provide professional investigative support for the prosecutors in the District Attorney's Office. All County of Humboldt District Attorney Investigators are sworn peace officers with years of law enforcement experience.

Division staff members investigate serious and sensitive matters submitted to the District Attorney's Office from local law enforcement agencies. Primary assignments for the division include:

  • Conducting civil and criminal investigations
  • Conducting insurance fraud investigations for Humboldt, Del Norte, and Trinity Counties, including:
    • Auto Insurance Fraud
    • Disability/Healthcare Insurance Fraud
    • Workers' Compensation Fraud
  • Working with the Child Abuse Services (CAST) and Victim Witness programs to provide support to victims of crime
  • Preparing and executing search and arrest warrants
  • Investigating Elder Abuse cases
  • Locating, interviewing, and serving witnesses with subpoenas
  • Processing evidence
  • Assisting local law enforcement agencies in major cases
