The Humboldt County District Attorney's Office seeks to achieve justice and enhance public safety while fully respecting everyone’s individual rights.

Jurisdiction & Service

The District Attorney is the chief law enforcement officer in the County, responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes and civil cases on behalf of the people. Our jurisdiction covers 4,000 square miles.   We provide service to 135,000 Humboldt County residents and all visitors to the County. The Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office includes about 63 employees: a dedicated and professional team of attorneys, investigative staff, victim services staff, and administrative and clerical support staff.

Functions & Assignments

The District Attorney’s Office has essential roles in four key areas:

  • Criminal prosecution (with specialized units dealing with domestic violence, elder abuse, and sexual assault/child abuse)
  • Environmental & Consumer protection
  • Juvenile justice
  • Victim-Witness services

Goals of the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office under District Attorney Stacey J. Eads include:

Provide vertical prosecution of felony criminal cases to maximize the probability of successful prosecution and support of victims and witnesses.

Maintain consistency and vigorous representation of the People through direct participation by the District Attorney in a large proportion of charging decisions and the handling of weekly trial assignments.

Maintain effective communication with all participants in the criminal justice system.  In particular, victims receive clear, honest and timely explanations for the actions of the District Attorney’s Office.  

Enhance crime prevention through community outreach and communication with law enforcement.
