Vital Records

The Clerk-Recorder’s Office is open for all in-person services between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm.  Customers will be assisted on a first "come first served" basis.   The number of customers in the lobby area is strictly regulated, so it may be necessary to wait in the hallway for your turn to be assisted.  

To avoid wait time, documents to be recorded, Clerk filings, copy order requests, and vital records certificate requests may also be submitted by any of the following: 

  • Drop box located outside the Clerk Recorder’s Office door.  Self service forms are available on our forms page and next to the drop box.
  • US Mail or Express mail
  • VitalChek online service (vital record copies only)

The Humboldt County Clerk / Recorder’s Vital Records division only issues certified copies and certified informational copies of birth certificates, death certificates, and marriage certificates. The Vital Records division is also responsible for issuing marriage licenses.  


Note: Certified copies of vital records can only be issued by the county in which the event occurred.  Therefore, if a birth or death occurred in, or a marriage license was issued by a county other than Humboldt, we can not process your copy order request.

Certificates

To receive a certified copy of a vital record, select the appropriate tab below.  Each tab will have a link that will take you to the appropriate application.  Fill out the application, have the notarization done (not required for informational), include money order or check for the correct amount, and mail to the listed address on the application.  This office only returns certificates from mailed in applications by regular mail.

Alternatively, you may place your order through a Third Party vendor called VitalChek that will take a credit card payment and allow you to do overnight UPS service, if requested.  VitalChek charges an additional $7.00 for their service and $20.00 for UPS overnight.  If you do not require overnight service, you must uncheck the corresponding box.  By clicking on the VitalChek image below you will be taken to their website.

Divorce Records

Divorce records are a function of the Superior Court of California. Follow this link to the Superior Courts of California Humboldt County website for more information.

Humboldt County issues only full certified copies of birth certificates.  Certified copies are acceptable for passport applications, social security, employment, and personal identification purposes.
