Kneeland

Local Community

Kneeland is an unincorporated community located roughly 12 miles east of Humboldt Bay, between Eureka and Arcata. The wildfire environment of this community is characterized by dense forest and open prairie -- both of which present unique wildfire risks and hazards.

Becoming Firewise

In September, 2015 Kneeland was awarded distinction as a Firewise Community. This distinction recognizes Kneeland for being proactive and choosing to work collaboratively to prepare for wildfire.

The Firewise program educates and helps neighbors work together in reducing their wildfire risk. Residents are empowered to take action and responsibility for preparing and protecting their homes and community against the threat of wildfire. The Kneeland Volunteer Fire Department, with the involvement of community members and the County of Humboldt, completed a Community Wildfire Assessment and companion Action Plan that guides residential risk reduction activities while engaging and encouraging neighbors to become active participants in building a safer place to live.

Action Tools

The Kneeland Firewise Community Wildfire Assessment (PDF) and Action Plan (PDF) are excellent tools for the community to learn about wildfire hazards in the area and collaboratively identify actions to reduce those hazards.
